Comparative Case Study: Understanding Why Clients Hire a 3rd Party Construction Manager
Many construction management students are unfamiliar with the project management for fee industry and the relationship between a construction manager and a project owner. Construction Management programs typically teach their students the variety of project delivery methods available to a client for their project. The Agency-CM project delivery method is not the most common project delivery method, and students have expressed interest in learning more about this side of the construction industry. This senior project will illustrate (3) different real-world projects where former clients chose to hire Cumming Corporation as an 3rd party construction manager and what factors drove them to seek their services. Each client had a different reason for hiring a 3rd Party construction manager, and this project will aim to differentiate and categorize these varying motivations. The information for this project was derived from 2 summer internships in 2018 and 2019 with Cumming Corporation, and will be presented in a comparative case study approach. This paper creates greater awareness and knowledge as to why clients hire a 3rd party construction managers and allows students to better understand if this is a career path of interest to them
Counterterrorism Investigator Perceptions: Homegrown Violent Extremists With Mental Illness
Terrorism endures throughout the world. Some individuals who engage in it may suffer from a cognitive disorder. For those who investigate terrorism, preconceptions exist both toward extremists and toward people with mental illness (MI). A review of the literature has shown how counterterrorism (CT) investigators perceive terrorists’ motivations, and how law enforcement perceives people with MI. In filling a gap between the two, this study aimed to research whether based on their lived experiences, do the understandings, perceptions, and attitudes of CT agents inform their biases and influence their decision-making and ultimately investigations of homegrown violent extremists (HVEs) with MI. A qualitative research tradition was used to collect data from 16 participants, all of whom were FBI CT investigators. After using interpretative phenomenological analysis, themes emerged suggesting that CT investigators perceived HVEs as cognitively and physically volatile, and that HVEs are predominantly motivated as a mechanism of MI, not ideology. Whereas CT investigators expressed empathy toward the MI aspect of case subjects, they also sought more training in the identification of MI. Investigators felt as though their beliefs were influenced by their peers, but not necessarily by society. Although CT investigators did possess preconceptions of HVEs with MI, they did not allow these perceptions to influence the investigative process, and reported they remained objective and impartial during the CT investigation. The results of this study may encourage the protection of society, assisting law enforcement and potentially thwarting acts of terrorism. The results may also have implications by informing standardized training of CT investigators, which could help them objectively assess HVE suspects
This research investigates the determinants of labor market transitions in the Southern Macro
Región during the 2013-2015 period. Current research has shown that cross-sectional and time
series methods have the disadvantage of generating little information about the dynamic
behavior of an individual in time. We use a longitudinal approach that will allow us to know
the behavior of individuals through their labor market transitions. We evaluate the impact of
human capital and individual characteristics in the transition from one working state to another.
We use data from the National Household Survey (ENAHO) to estimate two discrete dependent
variable models: The multinomial and random effects logit. Additionally, we check the
predictions of the Search and Matching theory by estimating the effect of human capital on two
sectors of the labor force: The skilled and unskilled sector. The results show that it is 1.22 times
more likely that a woman will be unemployed compared to a man. It is 5.70 times more likely
that a person residing in the urban area will be unemployed compared to a person residing in the
rural area. An increase in age reduces the probability of moving to unemployment by a factor
of 0.84 and it is more likely that a person in the skilled sector will remain employed compared
to a person in the unskilled sector.Tesi
NuSTAR Tests of Sterile-Neutrino Dark Matter: New Galactic Bulge Observations and Combined Impact
We analyze two dedicated NuSTAR observations with exposure ks
located from the Galactic plane, one above and the other
below, to search for x-ray lines from the radiative decay of sterile-neutrino
dark matter. These fields were chosen to minimize astrophysical x-ray
backgrounds while remaining near the densest region of the dark matter halo. We
find no evidence of anomalous x-ray lines in the energy range 5--20 keV,
corresponding to sterile neutrino masses 10--40 keV. Interpreted in the context
of sterile neutrinos produced via neutrino mixing, these observations provide
the leading constraints in the mass range 10--12 keV, improving upon previous
constraints in this range by a factor . We also compare our results to
Monte Carlo simulations, showing that the fluctuations in our derived limit are
not dominated by systematic effects. An updated model of the instrumental
background, which is currently under development, will improve NuSTAR's
sensitivity to anomalous x-ray lines, particularly for energies 3--5 keV.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. Text updated to match published version in PRD.

Trabajo no experimental, descriptivo, retrospectivo, transversal. Tesi
